pDNextSteps started in 2015 with a goal to help provide fitness options for people who are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Exercise has been one of the only things proven to slow the progression of Parkinson’s, and that is what we focus on. We saw the potential of what exercise can do for people with Parkinson’s (PWPs). pDNextSteps offers a safe environment for PWPs and we’ve become an integral part of their daily routine, improving quality of life through exercise.
We aim to provide resources and to help educate all parties (patients, caregivers, and the public) about all benefits of physical activities and treatments of Parkinson’s disease. We aim to improve the quality of life for these individuals through physical and educational programming
All of our programs are designed to improve the overall health and quality of life for those with Parkinson’s disease. We offer our classes six days a week with a different focus each day.
Mondays are for advanced high-intensity interval training (HIIT) circuit classes. The program is designed for veteran boot campers. It is a 40-minute circuit with additional cognitive and balance training.
Wednesdays and Saturdays are strength training days that focus on using free weights. These are instructor led and are designed for those looking to build strength. It is a great addition to boot camp workouts!
Tuesdays and Fridays are circuit training days. We focus on full body movements to get the heart rate up. There are also targeted moves that are helpful for people with Parkinson’s.
Thursdays are reserved for advanced HIIT with 30 minutes of yoga immediately after the exercise. This is not only healthy, but it is also a vital component for those with Parkinson’s in order to maintain balance and mobility and to delay the progression of the disease.
As the only business of its kind in our area, we strive to provide superior services combined with motivational and inspirational support. These traits are what drive our customers to successfully perform the exercises we’ve designed. Best of all, we instill community, loyalty, and a positive attitude in everything that we do.
Melissa Carlson is a certified personal trainer and the owner/operator of pDNextSteps. Melissa has worked in the health and fitness industry for the last eight years and became a certified Delay the Disease trainer in 2015. She started a boot camp class for PWPs in February of 2016 with just three participants. In December of 2018, she opened her own gym that now serves more than 60 PWPs each week.
Classes operate six days a week. She has begun producing an online video series for those who are unable to make it to a class. In her free time, Melissa enjoys spending moments with her family, playing with her animals, and reading.
